Recurrently, and especially during periods of monetary stress, an economic debate revisits the reintroduction of the gold standard.
In this Focus, we fi rst present the defi nition, the history and the mechanism of the gold standard and then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a return to this monetary regime.
