The originality of “Le B.A. BA de l’économie contemporaine”, which is available in book shops from 29 March 2013, lies in the dialogue it sets up between, on the one hand, economists and, on the other hand, teachers of economics and social sciences and teachers of economics and management at upper secondary school level.
This overtly educational and easily accessible work uses short interviews to relay the dialogue between its various authors. The questions that the teachers ask (What is a market? What is globalisation? How do companies work? etc.) reflect the difficulties that upper secondary school pupils encounter when trying to understand contemporary economic issues.
The book is accompanied by colourful leaflets summarising the economists’ arguments. These leaflets are adapted from the wall graphics of the “The economy: crash, boom or transformation?” exhibition running at Cité des sciences in Paris until 5 January 2014, which makes this little book a very useful extension of the exhibition.
“This is neither a manual nor a theory paper - even less so a manifesto: it is designed as an introductory guide to the various aspects of economic science”
“This is neither a manual nor a theory paper - even less so a manifesto: it is designed as an introductory guide to the various aspects of economic science,” remarks Claudie Haigneré, chairperson of Universcience, in the book’s preface. “How does the economy work? What drives growth and causes crises? What are the main trends in economic thinking? The exhibition and its accompanying book will provide answers to a variety of questions such as these,” states Banque de France governor Christian Noyer in his contribution to the preface.
