This indicator measures the number of mobile phone subscriptions per 100 inhabitants. Mobile phone use initially developed in the United States and Northern Europe, then rapidly spread to the rest of the world: from less than 1 subscription per 100 inhabitants in 1990, there was almost one mobile phone subscription per person on average in the world in 2014 (96 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants). Disparities remain however between continents and between countries in the same region. Thus, in 2014 in Africa, there were 78 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants; 109 in the Americas; 130 in Europe (including Russia); 93 in Asia; and 106 in Oceania.
