According to United Nations forecasts produced in 2015, the world's population is expected to rise to just over 9.7 billion by 2050. Asia is expected still to be the most populous continent and is expected to account for a quarter of the world's population in 2050. In 2021, India is expected to become the country with the largest population, ahead of China. China's population is expected to start to decline in 2030, with a total decrease of 2.5% forecast over the period. Europe is the only continent where the number of inhabitants is expected to fall, from 2018 onwards. Apart from the countries of Northern Europe, Ireland and France, all of the other countries are expected to see a decline in their population, with the most significant falls expected in the Balkan and Slavic countries. The continent of the Americas is expected to see its population increase by 25%.
