This indicator measures the probability per 1000 births that a newborn baby will die before reaching the age of five. Between 1980 and 2015, the number of deaths of children under the age of five decreased almost threefold, with 43 deaths per 1000 births in 2015. While the number of deaths in African countries has fallen sharply, it remains the highest in the world, with 83 deaths per 1000 births. By contrast, in North America, the European Union and Japan, the number of deaths is among the lowest, with fewer than 5 deaths per 1000 births. China has seen one of the biggest falls: the number of deaths decreased sixfold to stand at 11 deaths per 1000 births in 2015.
