This indicator gives an estimate of the number of women who die during pregnancy or childbirth per 100,000 live births. In 2013, there was an average of 210 deaths per 100,000 births, with great disparities between continents and in terms of levels of development. Per 100,000 births, there were 8 deaths of women in Europe, 26 in North America and 6 in Japan. By contrast, the number of women who died during pregnancy or childbirth per 100,000 births was 510 in sub-Saharan Africa; it reached 900 in Chad, the Central African Republic and Sierra Leone.
