The anamorphisis proposed by the Cité de l'économie
will show you the world in a way you may have never seen it.

Select the indicator of your choice at the top left of the screen
and then click on the 'Run the animation' button.

The surface of each country on the map then becomes proportional to the chosen indicator.
Thus, two countries that have the same value for this indicator
will have the same surface after transformation.

For some indicators, you can follow the evolution of the map over time by clicking the ► button that appears at the bottom left of the map.

The indicator currently selected is:
"Number of Internet users, 1990-2014"

This indicator gives the number of Internet users regardless of the device used (computer, mobile phone or tablet).
Taking all countries together, this number increased 1000-fold in 25 years.
Internet use first developed in the United States, which accounted for 75% of users in 1990, and Europe. Asia is the continent that has seen the fastest growth: the number of users doubled every two years until 2011 when the growth rate slowed.
In 2014, 1 out of 2 users was in Asia; 2 out of 10 users were in China; there are more users in China than in all of the European countries put together.
While there has been strong growth in Africa, the number of users only represents 8% of the total.
