This proportion measures the participation rate of women in the labour force. It is the ratio of the number of economically active women, i.e. those participating in the production of goods and services, to the total number of women aged 15 to 64. In 2013, taking all countries together, one woman over 15 out of two was economically active. This rate is over 75% in many sub-Saharan African countries, compared with nearly 55% in Europe and North America. In Europe, it is the Scandinavian countries that have the highest rate while the countries of Southern Europe have rates below 50%. It is in the countries of the Middle East that women's participation rate is the lowest: it only exceeds 30% in a few rare cases.
