This indicator measures each country's carbon dioxide emissions in tonnes. CO2 emissions, fuelled by the development of the emerging countries, almost doubled in the space of 30 years to reach 35 billion tonnes in 2011. India and China account for a third of global emissions; the United States for 15%; and Europe for 10%. While the United States' emissions rose by 10% over the period, India and China's increased sixfold. As for the European Union, it reduced its CO2 emissions by 20%.
