This indicator measures the number of articles published in scientific and technical journals per million inhabitants. Taking account of their population, European countries are those that publish the most scientific articles: in 2011, out of the first ten countries in the global ranking, seven were European, with European countries occupying the first five positions. Thus, Switzerland was in first position, followed by the countries of Northern Europe and the Netherlands. The United States and Israel dropped back by ten and eleven places respectively; they were ranked first and sixth in 1990. Asian countries such as China, South Korea and Singapore, which experienced strong growth over the period, saw their productivity in terms of the publication of articles increase more than tenfold.
