The anamorphisis proposed by the Cité de l'économie
will show you the world in a way you may have never seen it.

Select the indicator of your choice at the top left of the screen
and then click on the 'Run the animation' button.

The surface of each country on the map then becomes proportional to the chosen indicator.
Thus, two countries that have the same value for this indicator
will have the same surface after transformation.

For some indicators, you can follow the evolution of the map over time by clicking the ► button that appears at the bottom left of the map.

The indicator currently selected is:
"Share of population without access to running water in rural areas, percentages, 1990-2015"

This indicator gives the percentage of the population that does not have access to at least 20 litres of water from a domestic source, well or public reservoir in rural areas. Taking all countries together, just under 2 out of 10 people still do not have access to running water in rural areas. This number has been halved in 26 years, but great disparities remain.
While overall the situation in Africa has improved, some countries have seen a deterioration, such as Somalia and Sudan where more than 5 out of 10 people do not have access to water in rural areas. There has also been a deterioration in some countries of Central Asia.
By contrast, in North America and the great majority of European countries, all of the inhabitants of rural areas have access to running water, and this was the case well before 1990.
The share of people without access to running water is higher in the South.   Find out more
