This indicator gives the percentage of the population that does not have access to at least 20 litres of water from a domestic source, well or public reservoir in rural areas. Taking all countries together, just under 2 out of 10 people still do not have access to running water in rural areas. This number has been halved in 26 years, but great disparities remain. While overall the situation in Africa has improved, some countries have seen a deterioration, such as Somalia and Sudan where more than 5 out of 10 people do not have access to water in rural areas. There has also been a deterioration in some countries of Central Asia. By contrast, in North America and the great majority of European countries, all of the inhabitants of rural areas have access to running water, and this was the case well before 1990.
