Creation of the CAC 40 index in France
The CAC 40 is the main stock index on the Paris financial market. It draws its name from the system - Cotation Assistée en Continu - (Continuous Assisted Quotation): this electronic trading system replaced the traditional auctioning that used to take place in the pit at the Palais Brongniart. The CAC index is based on the share prices of the 40 companies that have a significant market capitalization and that belong to an industry with long-term growth prospects. It is calculated daily in real time and is regularly updated: some companies enter the index, while others leave it.
